JEE(MAIN)

JEE Main is a computer-based online test conducted by National Testing Agency for students aspiring to pursue undergraduate courses in top engineering institutes in India. JEE Main is the first phase of the IIT Joint Entrance Exam. The entrance examination till 2020 was conducted in two sessions and candidates could take the exam either in the month of January or in April. The candidates could further opt to appear for one exam or both the exams. The better of two NTA scores was considered by the exam conducting authority in preparing the ranks/merit list. More significantly, students are granted admission to IITs, CFITs, NITs, and other Government funded technical institutes based on the marks obtained in JEE Main. Also, the top 2,50,000 students from JEE Main will qualify to appear for JEE Advanced.

However, as per the latest update from the officials, JEE Main 2021 exam is being held four times a year. It will start from February 2021 and go on until May 2021 (New exam schedule has been updated below).

Duration of Exam: 180 minutes (3 hours)

Total Marks: 360 Marks

Total Sessions in 2021: Four Sessions

Exam Conducting Authority: NTA (National Testing Agency)

Purpose: Admissions to 31 NITs, 23 IIITs and 20 GFTIs

Mode of Examination: Computer-based

Language: 13 languages (English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and Punjabi)

Date of Examination:

(Session 1): 23, 24, 25 and 26 February 2021

(Session 2): 15, 16, 17 and 18 March 2021

(Session 3): 20, 22, 25 and 27 July 2021

(Session 4): 26, 27, 31 August – 1, 2 September 2021

Timing of Examination:

First Shift: 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (IST)

Second Shift: 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. (IST)

JEE(MAIN) 2021 Eligibility

Based on the following parameters the candidates will be eligible for JEE Main exam 2021

1. Nationality

Candidates must be a citizen of India. Foreign national candidates as well as NRIs, PIOs, OCIs can also apply.

 

2. Age Criteria

For appearing in JEE Main 2021, there is no age limit for the candidates.

 

3. Total Attempts

The students can avail a maximum of three consecutive attempts for JEE Main and two consecutive attempts for JEE Advanced. The first attempt is taken soon after 12th board exams followed by the other attempts in consecutive years. The exam will be held 4 times in a year so total attempts a candidate can appear for are 12.

 

4. Qualifying Exam

Below is a list of qualifying exams for JEE Main:

i. The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by any recognized Central/State Board, such as Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi; Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi; etc.
ii. Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a recognized Board/ University.
iii. Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defense Academy
iv. Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.
v. Any Public School/ Board/ University examination in India or any foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
vi. Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination.
vii. A Diploma recognized by AICTE or a State board of technical education of at least 3 years duration.
viii. General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
ix. High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

5. Subjects

It is mandatory for all students appearing for JEE Main that they must have pursued at least 5 subjects with Physics and Maths as their core subjects in their qualifying examinations. Students who have studied less than 5 subjects in their qualifying exam are not eligible for JEE Main. Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Language and one more subject of choice is required as eligibility for JEE Main.

To make it more clear for B.E./ B.Tech, the subjects included are language, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject, and any other subject. For B.Arch / B. Planning the subjects included are Language, Physics, Mathematics (mandatory), Chemistry / Biology / Biotechnology / Technical Vocational Subject, and any other subject.

 

6. Year Of Passing The Qualifying Exam

Students who have passed their 12th class examination or other equivalent qualifying examination in 2019 or 2020 are eligible for appearing in JEE Main 2021. Students currently appearing for their Class 12 2021 examination or other equivalent qualifying examination are also eligible, provided their result should be declared before 15th of June 2021.

 

7. Diploma Holders

If a candidate is a diploma holder then he/she can apply in JEE Main exam. However, one thing here is that the rank and score obtained in the exam will not be considered for admission in NITs or CFTIs.

 

8. Marks Eligibility

For the candidates belonging to general category-The students must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in their class 12th board exams or they must rank among the top 20 percentile in their qualifying examination for getting admissions in IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs.

For candidates belonging to a reserved category, a minimum of 65% marks is required for getting admissions in different undergraduate courses offered at IITs, NITs, IIITs and other CFTIs.
